The combination of cool mountain air and brilliant sunshine makes Alto Adige a unique wine region. In an area just as well-known for brewing beer, the wines of Alto Adige are finely etched with defined flavors and aromas. Pinot Grigio shows itself best in this alpine region, but other white grapes like the Austrian Gruner Veltliner thrive here, too. You can even find international white grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, which show a zippy, fresh character. While red wines are not as prevalent, they are worth your attention. Try a Lagrein, a fruity red grape reminiscent of Merlot, or go for the mineral-driven Italian expression of Pinot Noir, otherwise known as Pinot Nero.
