Italy’s “heel”, better known as the region of Puglia, has been steadily on the rise in the hearts of wine consumers. These are truly salt-of-the-earth wines, where grapes grow in stark landscapes that seem like nothing should grow there. Thanks to the introduction of grapes from the Greeks many centuries ago, ancient varieties such as Negroamaro and Primitivo have adapted to the unforgiving terroir of southern Italy. The result is powerful red wines, with noticeable tannins and alcohol, but these grapes also retain their acidity in such a warm climate to give a zesty finish. Wines from Salento in Puglia produced under the “IGT” designation often incorporate grapes from further north, such as Sangiovese and Montepulciano.
