The Ramirez de la Piscina family of San Vicente have been farming grapes in this historic village since the 13th century. Their family name is shared with the hermitage of Santa María de la Piscina, a 12th century Romanesque hermitage, a historic landmark site that is engraved with the Ramirez family crest, speaking to the family's long history in Rioja. Today, they produce small quantities of extremely classical Rioja wines from estate and long-term contracted vineyards in San Vicente and Abalos, two of the most important villages in the Sonsierra Riojana, a geographic "triangle" of quality between San Vicente, Abalos, and Labastida.
In early 1945, Julio Ramírez de la Piscina, followed the tradition inherited from his parents, and continued cultivating the family vineyards. In 1973, Bodegas Ramírez was officially founded and began to sell bottled wine under this name. In 1980, the fourth generation of the Ramírez de la Piscina family took over management of the winery, and in 1987, the name was changed to Bodegas Ramírez de la Piscina.
The Seleccion Reserva is a more modern style Rioja compared to their Gran Reserva. It is more fruit forward with good balance, structure, and depth. The tannins are refined. On the palate there are a multitude of flavors some such as blackberry, cherry, plum, currant, mocha flavors, a subtle licorice nuance, light oak/vanilla notes and typical mineral and baking spice hints. Enjoy it with a meat lover's pizza.
