In the far northeastern corner of Italy there is Friuli, a one-time member of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, known for some of the most interesting white wines on the planet. Certainly, you can easily reach for a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Chardonnay and be perfectly happy. However, Friuli offers a fabulous opportunity to explore native varieties, such as Friulano (a.k.a. “Sauvignon Vert”) which makes a green fruit and herb-scented floral wine with a full-bodied texture. Ribolla Gialla is a lighter-bodied wine with a similar flavor and aroma profile to Friulano, but with a distinct anise note. For reds seek out Refosco, a deeply-colored, tannic wine with a slight bitterness that makes an incredibly meat-friendly wine.
