Deep crimson with red brick hues. A lovely amalgam of varietal notes, Shiraz offering plenty of dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides lovely cool lifted aromas. A gentle swirl reveals preserved plums, fresh mulberry with pouring cream, cherry compote, milk chocolate, baking spices, fresh bay leaf, subtle white pepper and licorice. The palate is quite succulent, with lovely refreshing acidity and subtle tannins holding the fruit together beautifully. Ripe red fruits offer richness on the mid-palate, with flavors of dark cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry. Savory, charcuterie meats add a lovely savory, umami edge. Softly textured, medium bodied and very approachable.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz displays a vibrant crimson red color. It boasts a powerful aromatic bouquet with hints of mixed berry compote on top of custard, complemented by a touch of cinnamon. The palate is enriched with flavors of butchers shop pork, fennel sausage, perfumed aniseed, cardamom, and clove. Fresh notes of raspberry and rhubarb add a juicy and bright succulence to the wine. A creamy texture reminiscent of French pastries is enhanced by the influence of French oak. The cinnamon dusting gradually builds up the wine's texture, leading to a fleshy mid-palate with well-structured, powdery tannins that are perfectly integrated and balanced.
First released in the 1970s, Koonunga Hill by Penfolds is one of Australia's most recognisable red wines. Herby and peppery succulent dark fruits are accompanied on the intense palate by touches of cream, chocolate and herbs, with some soft tannins emerging on the finish.
