Wine's on a mission to cure MS

Written by Michael Bray, featured in The Press of Atlantic City on September 14 2016

It was 1990 when my mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). I was 11 years old and learned quickly that she would spend the rest of her life fighting this disease.

Twenty-six years and a host of daily challenges later, my mom continues to persevere and prove that a diagnosis does not determine your destiny.

I am incredibly grateful and excited to write about a philanthropic mission called The Right Notes. Born out of a passion to make a clear and significant difference in the lives of those living with MS, The Right Notes is the most comprehensive charitable wine tasting in South Jersey. The event features top-scoring wines from around the globe, live music, a live auction and an assortment of artisanal food creations.

From beginner to sommelier, this event is one of a kind for all levels. The best way to learn about wine is to drink more than one wine at a time. As with most things, when you can make a comparison, your mind — and in this case your palate — begins to make a connection between acid, tannin and fruit. And by then, you are well on your way to understanding wine! Needless to say, you’ll have your fair share to compare at this event.

With more than100 wines to taste and dozens of our industry wine experts on hand, I offer some suggestive “wine strategy” for navigating The Right Notes — or any large-scale tasting — like a pro:

1. Start with a “wine goal”: Look for the wines, producers, regions or varietals you would most like to learn about. Start here, because after 10 to 15 wines, your palate starts to weaken.

2. Develop an easy system to identify likes and dislikes in your program book: “X” = dislike, “Y” = like and “C” = curious, meaning you may want to revisit it later for a greater understanding.

3. You don’t have to drink it all: It’s OK to pour out wine. On every table there will be a “spit bucket,” and it’s there for good reason.

The fourth production of The Right Notes, presented by the Donovan Financial Group of UBS Financial Services, will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. Tickets are $80 per person or $125 for VIP, which includes early and private access to a grand tasting at 6:15 p.m. The majority of the funds raised at TRN will benefit the National MS Society, with a portion allotted to Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation.

With Gratitude. Cheers!
