Say cheers to Passion Vines' whiskey master class at Great Bay Tuesday

Dave Baldwin, “whiskey enthusiast” at Passion Vines in Somers Point, claims that their upcoming Whisky Master Class is not something you’ll easily find in this area.

“There aren’t a whole of events like this in South Jersey; maybe in the city, but not here,” Baldwin says.

The Whisky Master Class, sponsored by Passion Vines and held at Greate Bay Country Club 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, will be a rare and unique opportunity to learn about brown liquors from Glenmorangie’s Global Master Brand Ambassador David Blackmore.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Blackmore has had the distinct honor of being named Scotch Whisky Ambassador of the Year by “Whisky Magazine” for three years in a row. He comes from Moet Hennessy, parent company to single-malt Scotch whiskies Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, the two being showcased at the event.

“Blackmore knows everything about these brands,” Baldwin says. “He not only lives and breathes them, he drinks and breathes them.”

Made on the tallest stills in Scotland, Glenmorangie is the country’s most popular single malt and one of the fastest growing brands in the US. Ardbeg is one of the most heavily peated whiskies in Scotland and offers up the wild side of Scotch.

Guests at the event will be welcomed by bag pipers as they enjoy a "scotch-tail" and hors d’oeuvres. The classroom-style setting will have a tasting mat at each seat with eight pre-poured Scotches, Di Bruno Bros. cheese and Madecasse chocolates. Blackmore will lead the class through each whisky, while allowing time for a Q&A session. Some of the whiskies being tasted include Glemorangie 10 and 18, Quinta Ruban, La Santa, Nectar D’Or, Ardbeg 10 and Corryvreckan.

Following the presentation, guests will be offered butlered foods and the opportunity to smoke cigars outside. In addition, bottles will be available for signing and special orders can be placed.

Baldwin, who runs monthly whisky tastings at Passion Vines as well as “Whisky Wednesday,” claims that this event is an evolution for the business, in addition to being a fun night out for just about anyone.

“With great food, a beautiful atmosphere and our special guest, it will be a unique and enjoyable opportunity for whisky aficionados and novices alike,” he says.
